Camping Tips & Tricks
Send your personal tips for addition to this page to the webmaster. Take these tips with a pinch of salt and use your own discretion. Nobody will take any responsibility if it backfires on you.
General
- Never be outside on a camp without a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.
- Make sure that you have proper footwear when going outside. "Plakkies" (sandals) does not qualify. During the summer the heat will burn your feet fairly quickly.
- There are few 'nasties' in the veld (bush) here. Scorpion stings are VERY uncomfortable but almost never fatal.
- In case of a break down, stay together as a party and find or improvise shade. Do not split the party and wander of. Since you did tell somebody where you went and roughly what time you will be back; they will raise the alarm.
- Modern day replaced "Blou-draad" with tie-wraps. Many a camp have been saved by these ingenious inventions.
- Keep your sleeping bag rolled up until it is time to get into it - it will prevent you from sharing it with other goggas (insects).
- Driving on sand = Deflating tires. Make sure you have a decent pump to inflate with again. With deflated tires your speed should stay below 60 km/h. Do not deflate below 16 psi. Also see off-road tips.
Tent pegs
- Save those plastic bags from your shopping trips. Fill it with sand on the beach or rocks in the wadis. Saves you from fighting with a hammer to get pegs into the ground. (It also keeps the kids busy filling the bags while you pitch camp).
BBQ on the beach
- Always extinguish the coals with water after a braai and DO NOT cover it with sand. Somebody may walk over it and ruin everybody's day.
- Please take a black bag with you and remove the camp's rubbish when you leave - remember: "Take only pictures and leave only footprints".
- Cut the top half of a soda can; fill the bottom with water and put it into the coals. You will have no problem with flaring flames as the fat starts dripping...
Beach Camping
- Baby Oil removes stubborn oil stains from your feet.
- Use powder (Baby powder or any other alternative) on your feet before getting into the sleeping bag. It will remove all the sand particles and make your feet smell a lot better!
