email Group
Overview
The group uses a Yahoo! group (sa_group_oman@yahoogroups.com) to communicate with our members. By subscribing to the group a member will receive all messages from SAGO.
Any member may also send an email to the group which will be distributed to all other members.
Please note that this is a closed group which are moderated by the committee members. This implies:
- Members apply or are invited to the group
- Applications to join are checked before being allowed access to the group
- All messages are scanned (moderated) before general distribution. This cuts down on spam and unwanted advertising
- Moderators reserve the right to allow or disallow a message
- NO flame wars will be allowed.
A member have the option of subscribing with only an email address or by creating a Yahoo! Id and linking an email address to it. Note that you may have more than one email id subscribed to the group at any time.
Email address only:
- Send mail to the group
- Receive mail from the group
Yahoo! Id:
- Same as email address above
- Can access the group's previous messages and files available on the Yahoo! site
- Allow to search for messages in the archive (e.g. "dentist" will show all previous messages where members requested/suggested a dentist)
- Download files made available to the members. e.g. a list of current discounts available to the group.
- You may subscribe to other Yahoo! groups using the same id. For e.g. belonging to the Dive group, Social groups, etc. The list is very long ...
- You may have multiple email addresses belonging to the same Yahoo! Id. One email address is then assigned as the "primary address".
How do I subscribe?
- Send an email to a committee member and ask them to send an invite to your address
- Point your browser to here and click on the "Join this Group!" button. You will need to create an id first.
When trying to register with the group; please include a short paragraph of who of are. This allows us to identify and register new group members quicker.
Current Problem
OmanTel is rejecting all email coming from Yahoo! groups at the moment. We are trying to resolve this issue as it is bouncing only email directed towards addresses ending with "@omantel.net.om".
In the meantime a member can use another email address to subscribe to the list. I can recommend Google - www.gmail.com , Yahoo! - www.yahoo.com , etc. Create an address and subscribe the address to the list. We request that all members currently subscribed with their OmanTel addresses; do this.
Changing your primary address
Due to the bouncing of OmanTel addresses change your email address to an alternate address. Assuming that you have a Yahoo! ID:
- Sign on to Yahoo! Groups. Go to "My Account" - it will prompt for your password.
- Add more addresses if necessary - you will need to confirm them first.
- Click the radio-button to change your primary email address to any address other than OmanTel address.
- Click on "Finished".
Etiquette
- Always supply a subject in the "Subject" line. Many people will simply reject a message without a subject line
- Be courteous and polite with your message
- Refrain from insults
- No swearing
- If somebody answered a question you may have; it is not necessary to send a message to the whole list simply to thank that person. Send to him/her a note in private
- It is polite when "Forwarding" or "Replying" to a message to delete the addresses not forming part of the actual message. This prevents a two line message becoming very bulky since it has travelled twice around the world and contains almost every forwarders whole address book. Spammers love these messages because they harvest a lot of email addresses quite easily.
- Humour on the list is a touchy subject. We are a diverse group of people belonging to the group. Not all humour is appreciated equally. It is better not to send jokes to the list.
